Description

You can imprison my body, but you cannot hold my soul

Edit: I won second place! :happybounce:

I wanted to practice values again ^^ People kept telling me I shouldn't be afraid to make the shadows darker so... here you go! :D Of course I couldn't resist adding a few pops of color.
I'm pretty darn pleased with the final result, to be honest.

This is my entry for the Mythology Contest at projecteducate (Mythology Contest - World Myths)
It's often forgtten that for about 400 years, the people that inhibited the lands that a few thousand years later became the Netherlands practiced the Roman religion, until Christianity took over. They adopted the Roman gods and merged them with their own, creating a whole range of new Gods and Goddesses to protect them and guide them through what generally was quite a difficult life. But they didn't just adopt the gods, they adopted and adapted many aspects of the Roman culture. This changed the local cultures and customs forever.

One of the most important Roman Gods was Apollo. This scene is part of the story of Apollo and Daphne (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apollo_a…). I based the painting on a statue by one of my all-time favorite artists: Gian Lorenzo Bernini. For me this is more than just part of a story. It reflects the strength and resilience people can show in difficult times.
