Values in Composition: Drawing w a Limited Palette

Recently, @CoreLounge hosted a challenge in which people were asked to make a drawing using only three colors: Prompt and image courtesy of @akiestar and @KovoWolf over at @CoreLounge I was SUPER excited when I saw this prompt, because aside from being challenging, it was an EXCELLENT teaching tool / practice exercise. Why? Because, to fulfill it, you needed to apply knowledge in composition, values, and alternative shading techniques. I asked @akiestar if I could write an article breaking the challenge down into its components, and he said yes, so here we are! While the official CoreLounge challenge allowed people to combine the shades above to create "secondary" and "tertiary" colors, for this article, we'll use ONLY the three colors, pure, because that adds another learning element that's useful to explore. Ready? Let's go! 1. HOW TO APPLY COLOR? (MEDIUM) First, how, technically, do we use only the three colors, without combining them? I saw some people wondering

Writing Inclusively: Introduction

When you write something to share publicly, there is a whole world that it’s going to interact with. You can’t understand every facet of that world, but you can approach it with awareness and take responsibility for your impact on it. If you’ve ever wondered how to avoid inadvertent insensitivity, or (maybe especially) if you’ve never given it much thought before reading this sentence, the upcoming Writing Inclusively Week articles are for you! Look for these articles from and : On Tuesday, 9/29: @GDeyke and @neurotype write about how to include gender diversity. @akrasiel explains what a sensitivity reader is and why you should use one. On Wednesday, 9/30: @Zara-Arletis shares how to overcome editing bias. @neurotype introduces #OwnVoices and suggestions for writing about marginalized groups. On Thursday, 10/1: @BornWithTheSun helps you recognize abusive relationships in fiction. @JessaMar presents a simple path for providing trigger warnings. We hope you will find all of

Destructive is bad kids!

Photomanip Weekend If you have ever tried your hand at Photomanipulation, you might have heard of Destructive Photo Editing. "But what does it all mean?" You might be wondering, "Is there an earthquake everytime I don't use the same saturation for all my photos in a manip?" Fear not! I have come to help you dispel your doubts and explain what it means, and why you should avoid it. So what is Destructive Photo Editing? Destructive photo editing refers to editing a photo or part of a picture in such a way that it makes permanent changes to the photo's pixel data, making the original photo almost unrecoverable without abusing that undo button

Overview of the Anime Production Process

Anime & Manga Week Welcome to my summary of the common Anime production process! Many anime viewers probably felt it would be cool to make an anime of their own, or have their ideas turned into anime at the very least. It is, however, a pretty long process with a lot of people working on these episodes or movies, so creating them requires a lot of work and dedication. But the steps in this process can be applied to even smaller independent animations so knowing the steps is helpful for anyone interested in creating animation! I will cover the basic overview here, but there is a lot more to each of these steps than outlined here. Just

Timing fucking matters.

Time does a lot of things, it makes you older, it gets you to places, it never stops going forward. However you control when and how you use it! Everyone makes choices on a daily bases, most of them are actually done with your auto-pilot function out of habit. Most people usually sit in the same spot on the couch, chooses what to wear based on previously made combinations and so on, unless they consciously become aware of their action and might decide it's time for a change. It can be a small thing that makes people aware of their options You can count that pretty much every person out there works like this and YOU often depend on THEIR ch

Staying healthy while creating art

Community Week Addresing Hand injuries Hand injuries are one of the many nightmares that haunts every artist, not only for the pain but also for the amount of time such injuries can take away while an artist heals before continuing to work. Make no mistake, they can be treated, but of course it's much better to prevent such injuries before they become real problem that can cripple you from making what you love to do. After everything, nothing should stop you from achieving your dreams. A HEAVY HAND… Drawing in a prolonged period of time and wrong way can lead to tiredness and pain in our hands and back. With time, this can lead  t
